Community Living Month 2026: Celebrating inclusion, connection, and belonging

Every May, we celebrate Community Living Month, a time to recognize inclusion, accessibility, and the meaningful contributions of people with developmental disabilities. It’s also a reminder that strong communities are built when everyone has the chance to participate, be heard, and be included.

This year, we brought that message to life in a few different ways. Internally, we marked the month through team meetings, potlucks, and meaningful conversations with coworkers and the people we support. We also hosted pancake breakfasts in Fergus and Mount Forest, where staff came together over coffee, pancakes, and refreshments. These simple moments gave everyone a chance to slow down, connect, and catch up, even with busy and different schedules.

To help spread awareness in the wider community, we partnered with organizations that share our values, including the Town of Minto and the Guelph Public Library. Through posters, flyers, and signage, we helped share messages about inclusion and community living across the region.

The month wrapped up with the Joint Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee hosting its first community event in partnership with the Guelph Public Library on Saturday, May 30. The Community Market and Resource Fair brought together local organizations and vendors sharing programs, supports, and community initiatives.

Participating groups included 10C Shared Space, Guelph Pride, Guelph Enabling Garden, Guelph Food Bank, Guelph Black Heritage Society, Immigrant Services, and local vendors.

The event also had plenty of fun, family-friendly activities like henna tattoos, face painting, bubbles, and refreshments creating a welcoming space for everyone who attended.

Community Living Month is about connection, awareness, and celebrating the people and partnerships that help build a more inclusive community.
