CLGW's Dance Party Sparks Conversations with Local Candidates
Community Living Guelph Wellington and CUPE 4392 Host Successful Dance Party and Candidate Meet-Up
On Sunday, February 23, 2025, Community Living Guelph Wellington (CLGW) and CUPE 4392 hosted a Dance Party and Meet-Up the Candidates event. The event was held just before the provincial elections on February 27, 2025, giving the community a chance to meet local candidates and discuss issues impacting people with developmental disabilities.
Connecting with Local Candidates
The event took place at United Trinity Church and attracted over 70 attendees. This included people supported by CLGW, staff, family members, board members, and local elected leaders.
Candidates at the event included Alex Hilson (Ontario Liberal Party candidate for Wellington-Halton Hills), Cameron Spence (Ontario NDP candidate for Guelph), Simone Kent (NDP candidate for Wellington-Halton Hills), and Robert Coole (Progressive Conservative Party candidate for Guelph).
Attendees had the opportunity to speak with the candidates and share their concerns. Many focused on funding gaps in the developmental disability sector and healthcare. The candidates listened carefully and shared their priorities. They also committed to addressing the funding shortfalls impacting people with developmental disabilities and the organizations that support them.
Advocating for Better Funding
CLGW’s Executive Director, Cindy Kinnon, spoke to the candidates, urging them to take action. She said, “We urge the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services (MCCSS) to fund us properly to meet the real cost of living for each individual, ensuring everyone receives the quality care they need.” Cindy emphasized that this ongoing crisis is pushing both the organization and the people supported to an unsustainable level.
Beyond raising awareness, the event was also a fun and lively evening. DJ Frances Turk played classic tunes, getting the crowd dancing. Attendees enjoyed meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends, and making meaningful connections in a welcoming atmosphere.
Overall, the Dance Party and Meet-Up the Candidates event was a huge success. It brought the community together, gave people the chance to connect with political candidates, and raised awareness of the critical issues facing people with developmental disabilities.
