The Shoebox Project

This is the first year the project has reached out local businesses to create boxes as a team building exercise and Jennifer Ferron, coordinator for the Guelph Wellington Chapter of The Shoebox Project for Shelters, said she knows of at least 10 staff drives being organized to create boxes.

Laura Hanley, executive director of Community Living Guelph Wellington, said the agency is acting as a drop-off point, but is also allowing the projects some space to do their sorting.

“We support adults with developmental disabilities, so we know about vulnerable populations and we thought this was a good way to partner,” said Laura.

Although both giver and receiver of the gifts remain anonymous, Jennifer said some people add a hand-written note to their boxes before delivering them to the drop off points.

“It could be as simple as a note saying ‘you’re awesome’ to ‘happy holidays’ or a holiday card,” said Jennifer.

She added, “some people put in a little poem to give it that personal touch so it’s clear someone put some thought into what’s in the box.”
